January 20, 2017

The Korea Society would like to congratulate Ambassador Mark Lippert on his remarkable achievements in strengthening ties between the people of South Korea and the United States. His service as ambassador to the Republic of Korea, from October 2014 to January 2017, took the Korea Society's mission of improving awareness, understanding and cooperation a step further to forging strong friendship bonds between the people of the two countries.

During his watch, security cooperation with the R.O.K. was strengthened and trilateral cooperation with Japan was improved. It is encouraging to see that during the transition period from the outgoing U.S. administration of President Barack Obama and the incoming one of President Donald Trump support for the R.O.K.-U.S. security alliance remains steady and strong against military threats from North Korea.

It is noteworthy to quote Ambassador Lippert’s words in his Voice of America farewell interview regarding the future of the Korean peninsula, “the key message to all Koreans is that we want to see a unified Korean Peninsula one day, under a democratic government, free market economy, and in a government that respects the basic universal human rights of its people…that’s the dream we share.”

Thank you, Ambassador Lippert,
