New Narratives in Korea: "Poongryu"

Poongryu: Battle Between the Vocalists is a new music competition program from JTBC aiming to showcase a crossover between popular music and gugak, Korean traditional music. Featuring the best and brightest of a new generation of gugak singers and musicians, Poongryu has captivated the music fans around the world by introducing a new genre of music blending the traditional with modern twist.

Kyojin Hwang, Chief Producer of Poongryu: Battle Between the Vocalists, discusses the origin of the program, the increasing and renewed interest in gugak, and the phenomenal popularity of competition programs on Korean television.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Kyojin Hwang began her career at MBC where she served as a producer for such popular entertainment programs as The Knee-Drop Guru, Radio Star, and We Got Married. At JTBC, she has served as a producer for The Foreigners and a chief producer of Poongryu: Battle Between the Vocalists.
