Event Link: Cellist Jiyoung Lee “plays with passion and sensitivity. Her interpretation is impeccable for its depth of feeling and intelligence.” (The Times Herald-Record). Jiyoung Lee, 25, is from Seoul, Korea. She began studying the cello at the age of eleven and within five years, she appeared as soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, she won First Prize at the prestigious Korea Times Cello Competition, and first prize at the Ehwa Press Competition. Two years later, she began studying with Young-Sook Yoon at Seoul National University and was invited to play as a soloist with the Seoul National University Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007. Soon after, she decided to pursue her musical education in the United States. She entered The Curtis Institute of Music in the fall of 2007, studying with Peter Wiley, cellist of the Guarneri String Quartet. While at Curtis, Ms. Lee held the Joseph Druian Fellowship, and was principal cellist of Curtis Symphony Orchestra in her final year. In 2008, she performed a recital for the Kumho Young Artist Recital series in Seoul. During the summer of 2010, she went on a chamber music tour of Maine and Massachusetts, with Mr. Roberto Diaz, President of Curtis Institute of Music, as part of the "Curtis on Tour" series. Recently, she won the Juilliard Schumann Concerto Competition and performed as soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall in March. Other recent accomplishments include winning the 2012 Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition and placing 2nd in the Hellam Young Artist Competition. She performed the Elgar Concerto with The Hudson Valley Philharmonic in November 2012. She has attended the Great Mountains International Music Festival and School, The Sarasota Music Festival, The International Music Academy of Switzerland, where she performed chamber music at Victoria Hall in Geneva, and The Verbier Festival Academy, where she worked with Bernard Greenhouse and Torleif Thedeen. She also attended The London Master 7 Classes, where she studied with Ralph Kirshbaum at The Royal Academy of Music in 2010. In March 2013, she worked with David Geringas in Interlaken, Switzerland. As a chamber musician, she was invited to Music from Angel Fire, as a member of the Vespera Quartet in 2010. She has also been invited to perform at La Jolla Music Festival with her trio in 2013. Jiyoung Lee recently received a Master of Music Degree at The Juilliard School as a student of Timothy Eddy, and will enter the Artist Diploma Program at The Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick in September of 2013.

Cello virtuosa Jiyoung Lee performs Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6 in D Major, Crumb’s Sonata for Solo Cello, and Sibelius’ Theme and Variations. Lee, 25, began cello at age eleven and within five years was performing as a soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra. Winner of the prestigious Korea Times Cello Competition and Ewha Press Competition, Lee performed with the Seoul National University Philharmonic Orchestra and recently won the Juilliard Schumann Concerto Competition.
