Members’ Free Film Night: The Classic

The Classic, as delicate as it is unabashedly romantic, is a sentimental and refreshingly sincere valentine to the traditional Korean melodramas of old (famously satirized in director Kwak Jae-yong’s previous film, My Sassy Girl). It was a 2003 box-office blockbuster in Korea and all over Asia. Kwak has also made a film that, on a deeper level, poignantly illustrates the aspirations of parents for their children, as well as South Korea's development over two generations.

Beginning with a discovery of a secret box of letters, The Classic unfolds slowly and deliberately as it tells parallel tales of Ji-Hye and her mother and their respective romantic complications as they both fall in love with a man they cannot have.
