Join us for this discussion of Korean Smart Power, exploring opportunities and obstacles for Korea to leverage its cultural influence to advance its national interests, featuring Bernie Cho, President of DFSB Kollective, Jenna Gibson, PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, John Delury, Yonsei University Professor, and Victoria Kim, former LA Times correspondent, in discussion with Korea Society policy director Jonathan Corrado. In a wide ranging conversation spanning regions and industries, the panelists discuss the role of Seoul’s music, film, television, and education sectors in expanding Korean influence and prestige throughout its neighborhood and the world at large, as well as the impact this has for Korea’s diplomatic and geopolitical aims.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

 

Jenna Gibson is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago in the subfield of International Relations. Her research interests include: foreign policy rhetoric, public and cultural diplomacy, South Korean politics and social issues, and U.S.-Korea relations. Jenna was a regular contributor to the Korea column for The Diplomat for three years, and has also written about Korean politics and social issues for media outlets like Foreign Policy and NPR and think tanks like the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Before pursuing her doctorate, Jenna was Director of Communications at the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI). She previously lived for two years in Cheonan, South Korea as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. Jenna earned a Master of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University in 2015, and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011.

 
 

John Delury is Professor of Chinese Studies at Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS), where he serves as chair of the Program in International Studies at Underwood International College (UIC) and founding director of the Yonsei Center on Oceania Studies. He is the author of the forthcoming book with Cornell University Press, Agents of Subversion: The Fate of John T. Downey and the CIA's Covert War in China, and co-author, with Orville Schell, of Wealth and Power: China's Long March to the Twenty-first Century. Based in Seoul since 2010, his articles can be found in journals such as Asian Survey, Late Imperial China, and Journal of Asian Studies, his commentaries appear in Foreign Affairs, The New York Times, and 38 North. He contributes book reviews for the quarterly journal Global Asia, where he is associate managing editor. He received a Ph.D. in History from Yale University.

 
 

Victoria Kim is former LA Times correspondent. Since joining the paper in 2007, she has covered state and federal courts, worked on investigative projects and reported on Southern California’s Korean community. She has previously written for the Associated Press out of South Korea and West Africa, as well as for the Financial Times in New York. Kim was raised in Seoul and graduated from Harvard University with a degree in history.

He has earned a BA from Dartmouth College in Government/Asian Studies and has graduated from the Vancouver Film School (Foundation Film Program).
