The Korea Society is pleased to invite you to our members-only VIRTUAL Annual Membership Appreciation Party on Wednesday, February 16, beginning at 6 PM EST.
This fun and meaningful event is to acknowledge our members and their invaluable support throughout the year. This year, considering the ongoing Covid-19 surge in Omicron variant infections, we plan to continue this important tradition by presenting a virtual concert of Coreyah, a highly rated fusion Korean folk music group who recently appeared in NPR's Tiny Desk. Come and get acquainted with the talented members of Coreyah and enjoy their innovative Korean music!
We are also pleased to welcome Ambassador Chung Byung-hwa, the new Consul General of Consulate General of the ROK in NY as our special guest. Ambassador Chung will address brief remarks on his vision for the U.S.-Korea relationship during the event.
There will be a silent auction, and virtual raffle featuring wonderful new year’s gifts as well! This year, our auction item is Korean Air’s round trip economy ticket to South Korea(JFK-ICN). Coreyah is a psychedelic Korean folk music group whose six members integrate traditional Korean instruments, vocals, guitar, and percussion. Since their 2010 debut, Coreyah has pioneered a new style of Korean music that blends genres of contemporary ethnic and popular sounds while still maintaining the distinctive characteristics of traditional Korean instruments. The group’s unique freewheeling, polystylistic vision combines a variety of influences, including Anglo-American rock, Balkan gypsy, and genres from South America and Africa. Coreyah has toured around the world visiting over 50 cities in 34 countries, and continues to delight audiences at home and abroad. Coreyah was recently featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert in June 2020 and performed three songs from their new album.
Coreyah has release their 4th album "Clap & Applause" in July 2020. This new album celebrates their 10th anniversary with a dance-inducing, exciting new vision for Korean world music. The name Coreyah is a Sino-Korean homonym that refers to the inheritance of the past and also in Korean means “whale”—the group’s totem animal and good luck charm.
Band Members: Kim Dongkun (daegeum, sogeum, tungso), Ham Boyoung (vocal), Kim Chorong (percussion, Chulhyungeum), Kyungyi (percussion), Na Sunjin (geomungo), and Ko Jaehyeon (guitar).
