- Event Link: <p dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Cellist <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jiyoung Lee</span> “plays with passion and sensitivity. Her interpretation is impeccable for its depth of feeling and intelligence.” (The Times Herald-Record). Jiyoung Lee, 25, is from Seoul, Korea. She began studying the cello at the age of eleven and within five years, she appeared as soloist with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, she won First Prize at the prestigious Korea Times Cello Competition, and first prize at the Ehwa Press Competition. Two years later, she began studying with Young-Sook Yoon at Seoul National University and was invited to play as a soloist with the Seoul National University Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007. Soon after, she decided to pursue her musical education in the United States. She entered The Curtis Institute of Music in the fall of 2007, studying with Peter Wiley, cellist of the Guarneri String Quartet. While at Curtis, Ms. Lee held the Joseph Druian Fellowship, and was principal cellist of Curtis Symphony Orchestra in her final year. In 2008, she performed a recital for the Kumho Young Artist Recital series in Seoul.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-5a1dcc64-0883-9ac1-524b-782250f3b2bc">During the summer of 2010, she went on a chamber music tour of Maine and Massachusetts, with Mr. Roberto Diaz, President of Curtis Institute of Music, as part of the "Curtis on Tour" series. Recently, she won the Juilliard Schumann Concerto Competition and performed as soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall in March. Other recent accomplishments include winning the 2012 Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition and placing 2nd in the Hellam Young Artist Competition. She performed the Elgar Concerto with The Hudson Valley Philharmonic in November 2012. She has attended the Great Mountains International Music Festival and School, The Sarasota Music Festival, The International Music Academy of Switzerland, where she performed chamber music at Victoria Hall in Geneva, and The Verbier Festival Academy, where she worked with Bernard Greenhouse and Torleif Thedeen. She also attended The London Master 7 Classes, where she studied with Ralph Kirshbaum at The Royal Academy of Music in 2010. In March 2013, she worked with David Geringas in Interlaken, Switzerland. As a chamber musician, she was invited to Music from Angel Fire, as a member of the Vespera Quartet in 2010. She has also been invited to perform at La Jolla Music Festival with her trio in 2013. Jiyoung Lee recently received a Master of Music Degree at The Juilliard School as a student of Timothy Eddy, and will enter the Artist Diploma Program at The Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick in September of 2013. </span></p>

- Event Link: <p style="text-align: justify;"><img src="images/icons/2013/2013_01_17__sonnet-of-an-innocent-flower_artist.png" width="100" height="131" alt="2013 01 17 sonnet-of-an-innocent-flower artist" />Han TeRra (韓泰來) is widely recognized as one of the most outstanding and exceptional <em>kayagŭm</em> (12-string zither) musicians in Korea. Ms. Han began her training in classical Korean music and traditional performing arts, including singing and dancing, at the age of five. Ms. Han has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Korean National Commission for UNESCO and the Asian Cultural Council in New York. She also serves as an honorary ambassador of the Korean Center for International Affairs, member of the Korean Zither’s Association, and member of Asian Musicology. In order to expand her understanding of the <em>kayagŭm</em> and its repertory, Ms. Han has researched other Asian zither traditions including the Japanese koto, the Chinese jaeng, and North Korea's music represented in China. Ms. Han has been trained at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Seoul National University. Ms.Han is currently completing the requirements for the D.M.A. degree in <em>kayagŭm</em> performance from Seoul National University.</p>

Provine is Professor Emeritus of the University of Maryland’s School of Music. He also holds a B.A., two M.A. degrees, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He researches the music of East Asia (China, Korea and Japan), with a particular focus on Korean traditional music. He taught from 1978 to 2000 at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom, where he rose from Lecturer to Professor and Chair of the Department of Music. He has served as President of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (1993–95) and President of the Association for Korean Music Research (1996–2000). He has contributed entries to the <em>New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians</em> (2001), and is the author of <em>Essays on Sino-Korean Musicology: Early Sources for Korean Ritual Music</em> (1988), and many articles in various academic journals.</p>

As a performer and teacher, Kim Sumi has been active creating new <em>p’ansori</em> to add to the five extant stories that make up the traditional canon.
